My friends son must avoid gluten in his diet. I wanted to inquire about this, but I felt it would be impolite of me to ask. So, why must some people completely avoid gluten in their diets?

He’s allergic to it. Simple as that. Some kids are just born allergic to certain foods. You can ask I don’t think it would be rude but that’s going to be the reason.
Some people find it hard to digest/ are allergic to it. For these people the gluten makes it hard for nutrients to be absorbed in the small intestine so it can make them very tired etc. I’ve herd lots of stories from friends even those with no diagnosed gluten intolerance saying that once they gave it up they felt better and had heaps more energy.
theres different levels of it.
the people who must avoid entirely have the condition called ‘celiac’ it means that they cant absorb the protein in the gluten in wheat etc. until i started reading this i thought i had only a minor intolerance but this has actually taught me something.
i have a special diet which i dont follow and as ive read the protein which isnt digested reacts with intestine lining etc… the symptoms occur every 3-4 weeks due to a build up. i generally wake up fine but within an hour of rising i get terrible cramps in lower abdomen. now im someone who has always avoided panadol but ive learnt due to this that when i get hit with cramps i must take it.
if i didnt take panadol im stuck on toilet, not for any movements etc but it just feels for comforting. the next thing is a cold sweat covers whole body within 5min if no panadol taken. then i have a mild tinnitus which builds to an extreme till i cant hear anything else. within ten minutes my vision turns almost like a kaleidoscope. then the pounding head ache and within half an hour i pass out from pain…
well thats the story that ive learnt if i want to eat gluten i need panadol… some people i know get rashes though and others have throat swelling etc.
which suggests their are many different kinds og gluten allergies and i might suggest getting some kind of specific examinations done or something so as to no exaclty what to avoid… anyhow hope it works for your son… im 18 now and put up with this for bout 5 years so i think ur son should get use to a gluten free diet and not crave some of the rubbish that i cant give up…
a further note it also results in weight loss in some cases.. i cant gain weight im 6″3′ and only weigh 68 kilos and not being able to absorb the protien makes muscle growth shocking when ur vegetarian too…
well hope u can pick around what ive typed for an answer somewhere in the area of the question u asked
Gluten sensitivity, intolerance or allergy.
An allergy is a histamine reaction (like the reaction to peanuts or bee stings that people need an epi- pen for) they can be a lesser reaction with vomiting, hives, etc. or it can be severe and life threatening.
Go here:
If the child is sensitive, it means that they have a reaction to gluten, but not a histamine and not an auto-immune reaction (where I am heading next).
Go here:
Then there is the autoimmune reaction which is called Celiac or Coeliac disease. This is a genetic, autoimmune disease. There is an antigen reaction by the body when exposed to gluten (the sticky protein in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, triticale, durhum and other related grains in the Triticeae). The resuts and symptoms of the reaction vary from person to person, but usually the reaction destroys the villi in the small intestine resulting in malabsorption and all the issues that go with that. It is quite serious and very common, affecting 1 out of every 300 people (or more) and one of the most under diagnosed diseases in the US. Please go to the following links for more information:
and my favorite:
To Skorpian: PLEASE!! Stop eating gluten, you do not seem to understand your disease. Panadol only relieves your pain and does nothing to stop the destruction of your bowels and body. This is a very serious disease. Please take time to read the links that I have on here and go to celiac.com to learn more about the destruction you are doing to your body!! You can and will destroy your brain and body if you keep doing what you are doing! There is help and support out there to get you on the right track. My heart is breaking for you that you are destroying yourself like this! Please get help, educate yourself on your condition, get dietary and emotional support and get healthy! Blessings!
My cousin has to do this too. It is because they have cilliacs (spelling?) disease, which is when they cannot eat gluten or wheat. If they do eat something with those products, then they get an extremely painful stomach ache. Not fun. So, they eat special foods, special pastas, pizzas, bread, cookies, that are specially made without gluten or wheat so they can enjoy the same foods that we do, but obviously not to the fullest content.
